This Saikyo Kaido Tour is part of the Tourist Site Development Project promoted by Japan's Agency for Cultural Affairs. In the Edo period (1603 - 1868), Tanba Sasayama located in the center of Saikyo Kaido (Ancient West Kyoto Route) had been flourished as a city connecting Tanba area and Kyoto. This tour aims to discover and verify hidden charms of Tanba Sasayama through Saikyo Kaido. Applicants will know much about its history, local culture, and food!

1.Sumiyoshi Shrine (Kawara, Sasayama)
The main deity of the shrine is worshiped as the god of agriculture and industrial. The shrine was established in 1081 to pray for good harvest and averting disaster.
2.Fukusumi, rural houses
The Post station townscape remains from Edo period, as same as traditional rural houses around the town.
3.Tanba Toji Sake Brewery Museum
Tanba Toji is a group of masters of Sake brewers in Tanba area, and the museum shows their history how they have brewed Sake in conventional way.
4.The high-quality Sake "Houmei"
The high-quality Sake "Houmei" is made of underground water that flowing through the beautiful nature of Tanba Sasayama, which is made by Tanba-Toji, the master brewers succeeding Sake-brewing tradition.
5.Black Soybeans Edamame
The king of autumn tastes, Black Soybeans Edamame. The large grain tastes so sweet when it's boiled with salt, and it's an essential appetizer of Sake. They were also used as tribute for the lord.
6.Harvest experience of Black Soybeans Edamame
It's a Tanba Sasayama specialty to harvest Black Soybeans Edamame. After harvesting, you can try to taste the beans just boiled in a huge pod.
